Oak
no longer cool.

It's wood of kitchens, dressers, of desks and of armoires, of cabinets and moldings and shelves and chairs and floors. But now, they say it's passé; it has been for a while. It’s cherry or it’s walnut that now is all the style! And don’t forget that maple! Mahogany's unique! There’s always good, old pine wood and beech, bamboo and teak. I think I’ll keep the oak stuff as long as I’m around. Like me, it's also antique, it’s sturdy, and it’s sound!
I’ve never really been stylish. I also don’t like renovating my house to keep up with the latest fad. I live around a great deal of oak, and it’s held up well, so it will continue to age, like me. I’m also not in the phase where I want to paste tile to everything or have everything in my house come in white, off white or gray. I do love color! So be it.
Prompt for this poem is again from Petra Hernandez at Petra Glyphs for the 2026 February Poetry Challenge. I'm so grateful for ideas! https://open.substack.com/pub/petrahernandez/p/february-poetry-adventure-2026?utm_campaign=post-expanded-share&utm_medium=post%20viewer

I love oak furniture. Beautiful!
This is a good rendering of the poetry challenge, Carole. However, I am with you. I love oak and if we just wait it out it's like everything else in society --the love for oak will recycle and come back around. There's nothing like oak!
