"X" Marks the Spot

What's behind there?

I’m shocked to see the door
that leads into my work!
That big, red “X” is new,
so what behind it lurks?

The scarlet letter’s huge,
emblazoned with spray paint,
defacing the white door
now ruined with red taint.

What if there is a troll,
or maybe toxic gas,
or maybe nuclear waste
by which I now must pass?

Is this for quarantine?
Has there been homicide?
Could this be the crime scene
where someone has just died?

Imagining the worst,
I know I must move on
to find another door
and from this place be gone!

Inside my place of work
I find nothing disturbed--
no blood, no body bag.
No mayhem has occurred.

They say, the door is old
and needs to be be replaced,
so the death sentence “X”
is drawn across its face!

This door would never close,
unless it was first slammed,
and rusty, yes it was,
and frequently it jammed.

Now I am much relieved
to find that “X” benign.
I will no longer fret 
or take it as a sign!

Since I wrote this last week, the door has been replaced. Hopefully, it will also receive a coat of paint eventually. It looks nice, but no one programmed the opener that works with our badges, so it’s only good for going out of at the moment.
