It's Not Easy

...being green!

Oh, thank you, Mr. President, for cleaning up our pool!
Your color choice of indigo is really very cool!
On sunny days, light is absorbed so well by its dark hue
so we all have it nice and warm to do just what we do!

Reflecting pool, only cost you 14 million!
Great for us algae, we’ll grow by the trillions!

Pond scum, you call us, that's not nice!  Respect us, as you should.
We're doing photosynthesis! We're algae, and we're good!
Pool water is nitrogenous--Potomac is the source,
which has fertilizer in it from farm run-off, of course!

Reflecting pool, it got fixed without a bidder!
It’s dark blue, almost black, and it’s a winner!

The wetlands that we used to have absorbed the nitrogen
but now you've paved them over, so you gave us vitamins!
That extra food makes us grow quick, especially when it's hot.
At least we're making oxygen (and we know that you're not)!

But since you've got that extra land, and swamps you only drain,
why don't you like us algae? We're really not a pain.
We've got three billion years on you. We made most of your air.
So feeding us peroxide? Tell us how that seems fair!

We're green, and we're ubiquitous. We really like those ponds,
and of reflecting pools dark blue, we are now very fond.
We think that our friend Kermit, (you tried to kill him, too),
said "it's not easy being green." For algae, also true!

P.S. The latest news reports I've seen quote the cost so far of more like 16 million.  Sorry for the underestimate.
